❖ PHARISEE —A member of one of the opinionated and self-glorifying sects among the religious leaders and lawyers in Jerusalem. Pharisees accepted miracles, resurrection, angels, spirits, etc whereas their rivals the Saducees did not. Some of Christ’s parables are aimed at the Pharisees and their ilk.
➤ Parables SERIES —A lengthy, comprehensive, and meaty series that could keep a weekly Bible class going for six months or more. The lessons show the nature of parables and their main themes, and cover just about every recorded parable that Jesus told.
➤ Banquet Parables —about the parables of the Embarrassed Guest, the Luncheon for the Poor, and the Slighted Invitation.
➤ Mistaken Identity —One Sabbath day, Jesus and his disciples went walking through the grain fields. His disciples felt hungry, and began to pluck the heads of grain. They rubbed off the husks, and ate the kernels. When the Pharisees observed this, they said, 'You are breaking the Sabbath!' (Luke 6:1-2)
➤ Unwashed Hands, Unclean Hearts (Matthew 15:1-20) —Our text for study is about an occasion in which some scribes and Pharisees came to Jesus and asked why his disciples ate food without washing their hands. Jesus in reply asked them about why they paid lipservice to God but their hearts were far from him (Matthew 15:1-20).
